Cr-Mo Forged Backup Rolls (Cr3 BUR, Cr5 BUR) are selected where section integrity, contact fatigue resistance, and
load-bearing stability are critical under high rolling loads. Unlike forged
work rolls, their performance is not defined primarily by surface wear, but by their
ability to support the work roll system, carry rolling load, and remain stable
through long campaigns.
Grade selection is essential under high rolling loads, extended campaigns, overload conditions and operating instability. It becomes critical when rolling higher strength grades and both very thin and thick sections. In such cases, backup roll performance is governed mainly by contact fatigue resistance, load distribution, and overload tolerance, rather than alloy level alone.
Grade selection must be based on rolling
mill parameters and performance targets, including rolling load, load
distribution, overload history, mill stability, required hardness depth, and
campaign expectations. Backup rolls must not be selected with work roll logic.
Cr3 BUR and Cr5 BUR belong to the same Cr-Mo forged backup roll family. Their difference
lies in how contact fatigue resistance, load-bearing capacity, toughness,
hardness depth, and instability tolerance are balanced according to actual
rolling conditions.
Cr-Mo Forged Backup Rolls (Cr3 BUR, Cr5 BUR) form a grade group in which contact fatigue resistance, toughness, and hardness depth are balanced. The difference between Cr3 BUR and Cr5 BUR lies in how load-bearing stability and tolerance to unstable conditions are achieved under actual rolling conditions.
Higher alloy levels may improve hardness depth and contact fatigue
resistance, but only when supported by mill stability, roll internal integrity,
heat treatment quality, and grinding practice. The highest alloyed grade is not
always the correct solution. Grade selection must be based on actual rolling
conditions, load distribution, overload history, and campaign targets.
Cr-Mo Forged Backup Rolls (Cr3 BUR, Cr5 BUR) belong to the broader family of forged rolling mill rolls used in steel and non-ferrous rolling mills.
Vulcan Metal provides forged rolling mill rolls, including Cr-Mo forged backup rolls and other forged roll materials, selected according to actual rolling mill conditions and performance requirements.
